Containers: tangible and assumed (A coat)

Black canvas coat exploring themes of holding, containing, imagining and enough-ness. Featuring cream hand-stitching and hand-dyed and stitched patches.

Details: Flared sculpted oversized hip panels with pointy hem, 2 pockets, red and black trim inside, sleeve, bust and shoulder darts, brass buttons, hand-sewn buttonholes.

Also I want to talk about the above shape. Some artists spend their lives in front of fruits and nudes trying to capture their version of reality. Right now I'm curious about these little raw energetic sketchy objects that are suggestive of possible structures but really don't make sense. This particular one hits all the notes for me.

Real working artist talk: I was just writing the description for my open studio event and landed on "Prices range from the under-twenty-dollar sale bin up to I-wrenched-this-unfathomable-time-sink-of-a-wearable-art-piece-out-from-the-depths-of-my-soul just for you and there will never be another like it." I think you can see where this one lands. People tend to get envious when I sell bigger project pieces like this. Honestly, I pour so much (time, energy, thought) into them that I make less than I do on other work, if money is what we're counting. But my heart is drawn toward these objets-d'vêtements and if there's anything I'm doing with my life right now, it's following my heart and gut and letting my brain take some well-deserved time off. xo - helen
